So Close

Here we go everyone only about a week left. Personally I'm excited to walk and I think everyone else that is walking is feeling the same way right now.

Getting to the project, I have put together my magazine pretty well so far but I still have some things to do. I decided that inside my magazine, I would have a page fully dedicated to advertisements. But not only would these advertisements be in the zine, but they would kind of represent each page that has its own theme with it. Music will have Beats by Dr. Dre, Fitness will have the pre-workout supplement Jack3d, Kawasaki will represent my present motorcycle that I own, Scion represents the car that I currently own, and I am hoping to receive a logo from my tattoo artist so that I can include him into the advertisements also.

On the back cover of my zine, I wanted to dedicate it to "My Life" being a whole collage on who I am. I want to have pictures of friends, family, and fun activities that I like to do like going up to my camp and beating. I think this page will put my life into a nutshell for all of the readers to visually see. By putting this together I hope to show everyone who I truly am.

Final Project still going

The weeks are getting down and almost summer vacation. Im getting excited but Im still concentrating on all of the work I am getting in classes, especially this one. My zine is actually going pretty well. I have been able to come up with the subject that I want in the zine but im thinking about adding more.

I am thinking about the back cover right now to kind of tie everything in. I was thinking about a page dedicated totally to me and things that I have done in my life, like a collage. Im thinking this would be a great way not only to finish up the final project, but also to finish up all of the work I have been doing for classes. I feel like this will be something just for me.

Obviously also all of you will be able to see the things I have done in my life, so I think it would be a good time. I was able to download some different fonts from offline, so Im hoping that this will make it look a little bit more catchy and different. I was getting sick of all of the normal fonts that come on the computer. Also, I wanted to make the fonts to page the theme of the page.

We will see how it goes. Not much longer everyone.

Well after starting my project up, I actually did decide on doing my own magazine. As Amy and I talked about, there is a certain word for what I'm doing but I forgot what it was called. Its going to be a magazine that deals with everything that I like in my life ranging from motorcycles to tattoos.

Getting going on this was a little harder than I thought, but once I started rolling I knew what I had to do. I took a look at some magazines online to get a rough idea of what I had to do for it. I mean its not professional but I still think it looks good.

I started it off calling it Dom's Mag. I think it could eventually be changed to DM if it were to be a real magazine someday. I started off talking about tattoos and my own and then maybe what I would like to get someday. My next part is on cars, the one I own and the one I hope to own in the future. But I don't want to give out all of the information on my project so Ill just wait to tell more next week.

Final Project

After getting the information on the final project, a lot has been running through my head of what to do. I have thought about CD covers, calendars, business cards, and many others. But I think that I have came up with a final idea. A magazine.

I want this to not just be any normal magazine on a certain topic, but a magazine all about what I like. Its going to be a kind of all about Dom magazine. I want to include motorcycles, cars, tattoos, and different types of music throughout the magazine. I think that it will be something that can keep me going throughout the entire rest of the time that we have, and keep me interested. 

To be honest I actually think that a magazine like this would relate to a lot of different types of people also. I think that certain times magazines get to be like all of the same stories and topics. I think by keeping it fresh and changing up themes would not only keep me interested, but also a reader interested.

I was also thinking about throwing in some types of advertisements like a real magazine would have. This is just something I'm thinking about but might have to include. I am going to get started on all of this but have no promises this is where I am going to end up come presentation time.

Project 4 in Progress

With the due date of Project 4 quickly upcoming, I feel that my project is almost done. It was nice to do some work that may actually be used in real life. Like I said in my last post, I am doing my brochure for Buffalo Paws and Claws, an animal shelter and rescue out of East Aurora.

After the project is done, I was thinking of contacting Kristy Cordova, the founder of Buffalo Paws and Claws, and see if she actually wanted to use the brochure for her organization. I am hoping that if she decides to use the brochure, it will help her cause and help adopt out animals in need. This will be something that means a lot to me and will make me feel like I am contributing to a good cause.

To be honest though, I am actually excited to start up on the final project since I have tons of different ideas that I want to do since we are able to do anything we want. I dont want to give anything away already but I am thinking of doing a short magazine with as many pages as it takes me to take up the entire 8 studio sessions. Im sure by the time I actually start the project I will have changed my mind, but we will see how it goes.

Tri Fold Brochure

With our 4th project coming up on us already I have been thinking about what I should do for the tri fold brochure. At first, I was thinking about doing it on Buffalo State Athletics since I work in the Sports Information Department here and could easily put a book together on that.

But after going and seeing my Husky and some of the dogs I have fostered in the past, I decided on doing it on my favorite non-profit organization called Buffalo Paws and Claws. They are located out of East Aurora. I went out there last year and looked at dogs to foster and fell in love with it. I chose a Rottweiler named Shasta who I loved and took care of until she got adopted.

I think that this organization is a great one that deserves a lot of respect and also more popularity in the community. I think that doing a brochure for them will not only be fun, but can also help them out in the future.

I am going to put some information on the organization, and put what they do like fostering and adoptions of all of their animals so maybe they can be sent out to people in the community and these animals will get an opportunity to go to a good home.

I might even include a couple pics of my own pets, but you never know.

Spring break

This is one of my favorite posters because of how much it means with four simple letters. It was made by Steez posters but does not have a date when it was actually created. It has weapons of war that are deadly and dangerous and usually terrifying spell out the word love. This is a type of oxymoron in the fact that weapons usually do not mean love. The fact that you can actually spell out the word love with these weapons is kind of funny. I think that this message can convey two different messages. One is that people love weapons. The other is that weapons and love don't mix, but why can weapons make the words love.

Project 3

After taking a glance at the posters that were put on here, I came up with some good ideas for my project. The theme of my poster will be based upon to Stop Dog Fighting. I really do love animals and dogs the most of all. I feel strongly about this subject an believe that this message needs to be heard. I took a picture of my friends pit bull and blacked him out like he is nobody to represent the emptiness that owners think of their dogs. I also made it a little graphic so it will give the poster excitement. I am excited to show everyone what I came up with today.

After watching the video on Ira Glass, I came to see that his story that he is telling is talking about design and how it doesn't come to you out of nowhere. Its about how when you start off in design most of your work isn't as good as you might think. It takes a bunch of work to realize what your strengths and weaknesses are so you are able to get better. If you give yourself time constraints then it will bring you to work at a certain pace so that you can accomplish more.

He also talks about how your taste when you start off is really good. But its the fact of putting that taste onto a document that is the hard part of design.

I agree with these statements because I am a beginner designer. I think that my work is okay until I look at someone who has been doing it for years. With the more experience you have doing design, the better it will make you, and I think that with the more designs I do in class, I'm going to get better and better.

I think that my next design will be an okay one. I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but I hope inspiration comes to me soon.

Thoughts on project 2

I have really been struggling thinking of ideas on project 2. I think that its a fun idea to try and come up with a story and implement pictures into it to help tell that story. Right now I don't even know where to begin on this story, so I have been taking pictures of almost anything just to give me an idea. I looked at the link that was posted on the class blog and saw that the story doesn't really have to make sense, but I might want to make mine. Some of those stories were pretty funny and I would recommend for my classmates to take a look at one or two.

Thoughts on first Assignment

After learning a little about design and going over some famous designs,  we started our first project of the class. The task is to create a design with just our initials and wording in it, no photos. At first, I thought this would be a simple task, but after thinking about all of my options, I have changed my mind a couple times. I went with the idea of having two sides to me, a physical side that loves anything to do with physical activities, and a mental side that has to do with feelings and emotions.

I split up my project into a black side, being the physical, and a white side, being the emotional. Over these I have the opposite color font as the background. I also incorporated a short summary of me in the middle of the project, and a couple of my favorite prayers on the side. There are also some words describing me on each side. I cant wait to get it done this week and show the class what I'm all about.

Blog 1- First Day of Class

Whyis it important for Communication majors to study design?

Ibelieve that it is extremely important for communications majors to studydesign because design is a way of communication. When studying how tocommunicate with publics, people, elders, businesses, or clients, not allcommunication has to be verbal, in fact, most of it is nonverbal. This is hugebecause sometimes what we can say in a design can be more than any words cansay. If we know a lot about design, then it broadens our characteristics to beable to deal with new parts of communications. Being able to make a brochure,or poster, or slideshow can be a make or break decision from a client whenthinking about picking someone to represent them.

Whydoes good design matter?

Gooddesign matters to me personally because it can be a way to communicate to thepeople without actually communicating. If somebody has bad design, it couldresult in clients or customers not thinking the business are reliable. Gooddesign could make a whole Public Relations campaign be successful. But it canalso make a campaign fail is the person is not able to come up with gooddesign.

Writeabout a favorite piece of design that you’ve noticed. This can be a poster, apackage design, a billboard, a menu, a brochure, etc. What do you like about it?Why do you think it can be considered good design?

I know it maynot sound like a poster that people would normally say would be good design,but I think that the poster for the movie Scarface is one of the most memorableones in my mind. Not only do I have that poster hung up on a wall but I alsohave it in other places. The half black and half white design is classy in everyway. I like how Al Pacino is wearing a white suit, so on the white half of theposter you can really see what he is wearing, but on the black part, it comesall together and shows that he is a kind of tough mobster.

I thought itwas interesting to find out that video about Comic Sans font. I never used tonotice how much it is used in hallways, restaurants, bars, and everywhere. Ithink that the public has just got used to it and accepted it as a kind of non-formalfont. I think in certain places it can be used very well, but in others, it canbe a big downfall in an advertisement.
